How to burn your candle properly: our workshop’s complete guide
Share
A scented candle that is used properly lasts longer, gives off more fragrance and reaches the end of its life without leaving wax at the bottom. Here is the advice we give to all our PHLAME customers.
1. The first burn is crucial
This is the golden rule: the first time you light your candle, let it burn until the wax has melted across the entire surface (around 2 to 3 hours depending on the size, 75 g or 150 g).
Why? Wax has a "memory". If you put it out too soon the first time, it will always tunnel and leave wax around the edges. As a result, your candle will not last as long and will release less fragrance.
2. Trim the wick before each use
Before each lighting, remove the blackened part of the wick (with your fingers once the candle has cooled, or with a wick trimmer), leaving only about 5 mm of wood. This prevents:
- A flame that is too high (and dangerous)
- Black smoke
- Blackening of the glass container
3. Respect the maximum burn time
Never let a candle burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Beyond that, the wax overheats, the wick carbonises and the fragrance loses its finesse. After 4 hours, put the candle out, wait until it has cooled completely and remove the blackened part of the wick; you can then light it again.
4. Keep it away from draughts
A flickering candle smokes and burns unevenly. Place it somewhere calm, away from open windows, fans and busy hallways.
5. Put it out gently
To put out the flame, smother it with a candle snuffer or the lid rather than blowing on it. This avoids smoke and protects the wick.
6. Store it away from light
Direct sunlight fades the wax and alters the fragrance. Store your candles in a dry place at room temperature (16–22°C), away from direct light.
7. When should you stop using it?
Stop lighting your candle when about 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom. This is a matter of safety: the heat could crack the glass.
Bonus: what to do with the container?
Our PHLAME containers are made of recyclable glass. Once your candle is finished:
- Soak the container in hot water to soften the remaining wax
- Scoop out the wax with a spoon
- Wash it in soapy water
- Give it a new life: pencil pot, mini vase, cosmetics jar, tealight holder...
