Fragrances from Grasse: the soul of our PHLAME candles
Share
When it comes to French perfume, one name always comes up: Grasse. This small town in the Alpes-Maritimes has been the world capital of perfume for more than three centuries. It is there that we source every fragrance used in PHLAME candles.
Why Grasse?
Its microclimate, its soils, its proximity to the Mediterranean and its centuries-old tradition make Grasse the only place in the world where certain perfume plants can be grown and extracted in the very best conditions. Jasmine, centifolia rose, tuberose, violet… raw materials that exist nowhere else in such quality.
In 2018, the skills related to perfume in Grasse were even inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Our selection process
Every phlame.liveagrance is selected by our olfactory director, Pierre-Baptiste Bouard, who travels regularly to Grasse to meet our partner perfumers. The process is demanding:
- Olfactory brief: we define the emotion we want to evoke (cosiness, freshness, sensuality...)
- Smelling strips: we test 15 to 20 variations of each fragrance
- Wax test: beeswax slightly alters fragrances, so we have to make adjustments
- Burn test: we check the hot and cold scent throw over at least 30 days
- Approval: only one fragrance in five makes it through every stage
No phthalates, no colourants
All our fragrances comply with the strictest IFRA standards. No phthalates and no added colourants: just pure olfactory emotion.
Three PHLAME scent families
We work mainly with three families:
- Floral: cotton flower, powdery rose, sambac jasmine
- Warm and woody: sandalwood, cedar, vetiver
- Gourmand: bourbon vanilla, blond tobacco, amber

The art of composition
A scented candle is more than a simple scent. It is a musical composition. The opening notes (the top notes) catch your attention. The heart notes define its character. The base notes linger and leave their mark on your memory. Every PHLAME creation is built around this structure.
