Ambience candle vs scented candle: what is the difference?
Share
“Ambience candle”, “scented candle”, “decorative candle”… these terms are often used interchangeably. Yet they refer to quite different things. Our PHLAME workshop explains.
The ambience candle: light first and foremost
An ambience candle is designed above all for its visual effect. Its purpose is to create an atmosphere through the light it gives off. It can be:
- Unscented (pure natural wax)
- Lightly scented (a very subtle note)
- Coloured or decorative (with inclusions, gilded, sculpted…)
You will often find it on dinner tables or in bathrooms, as a decorative touch. Its DNA is all about the flame and the aesthetics.
The scented candle: all about the sense of smell
A scented candle is designed to fill a room with fragrance. Its composition is specific:
- A wax chosen for its scent throw (plant-based wax releases fragrance better than paraffin)
- A high fragrance concentration (8 to 12% on average)
- A correctly sized wick to create the right melt pool and diffuse the fragrance well
- A carefully designed container to optimise diffusion (most often a slightly flared glass)
This is what we make at PHLAME: candles designed by and for the sense of smell, even though they also give a beautiful light.

And where does the decorative candle fit in?
The decorative candle is often a sub-category of the ambience candle, with an even stronger focus on aesthetics: sculpted, twisted, coloured, shaped like a fruit or a character. It may even never be lit (a purely decorative object).
Which candle for which occasion?
- Romantic dinner at the table: an ambience candle (light comes first, and fragrance should not interfere with taste)
- Living room in the evening: a scented candle (an enveloping olfactory atmosphere)
- Bedroom, sleep ritual: a scented candle with soothing notes
- Spa-style bathroom: a fresh scented candle (eucalyptus, green tea)
- Pure decoration: a decorative candle
- A gift when "I don’t know their taste": a neutral ambience candle or a comforting scent (soft vanilla)
The PHLAME approach
We make only scented candles, because we believe smell is the sense most closely linked to emotion and memory. A scent can transport you in a second. That is the emotion we want to offer.
That said, our candles are also beautiful to look at — elegant glass, a handwritten label, a steady flame. So you can also use them as ambience candles, without ever sacrificing fragrance.
Our tip
If you are new to the world of candles, start with a quality scented candle: it will give you the finest experience. Decoration can come later.
